I spent the June long weekend up in the Hunter Valley this time last year (the year the place was absolutely flooded!). Despite all the rain it was actually a perfect weekend because all the roads in and out were cut off the vineyards were quiet and winemakers willing to talk and share some of their better stuff.
We stumbled across Margan Estate by accident, a little family run vineyard in the North Western quadrant of the hunter. Alas their tasting room had also been flooded, but their Shiraz was probably one of the better ones I picked up all weekend.
The thing I like about the Margan wines is you can taste the subtle differences between vintages. The 2005 Shiraz has a deep purple colour with a mild pepper spice and would sit in the more full bodied category compared to the typically weak hunter shiraz.
I noticed some of the 2005 still available from Dan Murphys, so if you them its well worth picking up a couple of bottles!
